Rain

November 10th, 2009 Posted in Uncategorized | 1 Comment »

Been camped out inside all day watching non-stop rain outside, and looks like more of the same tomorrow. Even though this means no motorcycle riding on my days off I’m happy. Our main watershed is about 10′ below normal as I type this. weatherman says we’re about normal for rainfall now. I just hope someone with some authority notices before we’re back to water restrictions again, or worse. Anybody remember the last bout? thought not.

Has V taken over the white house?

Hopefully I’m not stepping on anyone’s toes from the Tribune. I just couldn’t help spreading this chuckle.

BTW, I’m independent neither Democrat or Republican. I think they’re all a bunch of bullshitters whatever party the cockroaches choose to scurry under.

‘V’ aims at Obamamania

By Glenn Garvin

McClatchy/Tribune News

November 3, 2009

Imagine this. At a time of political turmoil, a charismatic, telegenic new leader arrives virtually out of nowhere. He offers a message of hope and reconciliation based on compromise and promises to marshal technology for a better future that will include universal health care.

The news media swoons in admiration — one simpering anchorman even shouts at a reporter who asks a tough question: “Why don’t you show some respect?!” The public is likewise smitten, except for a few nut cases who circulate batty rumors on the Internet about the leader’s origins and intentions. The leader, undismayed, offers assurances that are soothing, if also just a tiny bit condescending: “Embracing change is never easy.”

So, does that sound like anyone you know? Oh, wait — did I mention the leader is secretly a totalitarian space lizard who’s come here to eat us?

Welcome to ABC’s “V,” the most fascinating and bound to be the most controversial new show of the fall television season. Nominally a rousing sci-fi space opera about alien invaders bent on the conquest (and digestion) of all humanity, it’s also a barbed commentary on Obamamania that will infuriate the president’s supporters and delight his detractors.

“We’re all so quick to jump on the bandwagon,” observes one character. “A ride on the bandwagon, it sounds like fun. But before we get on, let us at least make sure it is sturdy.”

The bandwagon in this case is conspicuously saucer-shaped. “V” starts with the arrival of a couple of dozen ships from outer space, piloted by creatures who look like humans except a lot prettier. “Don’t be frightened,” says their luminously beautiful leader Anna (Morena Baccarin, “Serenity”). “We mean no harm.”

The aliens — who become known as V’s, for visitors — quickly enthrall their wide-eyed human hosts.

A handful of dissidents hold out against the rapturous reception given the V’s. Some are simply uneasy, such as the youthful priest Father Jack (Joel Gretsch, “The 4400″), who sharply criticizes the Vatican’s embrace of the V’s as divine creations: “Rattlesnakes are God’s creatures too.”

With or without the political sheen, “V” is sweeping television storytelling at its best. Whether you choose to view it as a blood-and-guts war story, a spy thriller (unlike the original show, these V’s are perfect replicas of humans, so you never really know who might be sitting beside you at the bar), a high-stakes family drama (as households divide over the intentions of the V’s), a religious allegory (the V’s make a crippled man walk, filling up churches again) or just a sci-fi throwback to the days of “Earth vs. the Flying Saucers” and “The Thing,” “V” is irresistible. This bandwagon is definitely worth jumping on.

Politicos

Hmmm… Met a sight today coming home from work that is kinda out of the ordinary for a small NC city. I saw a local police car with lights flashing followed by a couple of tan SUVs and then a NC State trooper also flashing merrily along. Only as the parade was speeding on in the other direction out of sight I noticed the flags on the front fenders of one of the SUVs. Must have been a high ranking politician or diplomat, huh?

Got me to thinking. Why do we afford these bozos such privileges? They’re the ones who pass laws, measures, start wars and other unsavory things to make our life more miserable, often against the wishes of the majority of the intelligent public. Let them deal with traffic, pay their own insurance and taxes, and send their kids to other countries to fight wars for people who could care less. Bet there would be some changes then!

Guess I’m getting more jaded in my old (50) age. (g) I sweated out the end of the VietNam “conflict” praying it would end before my number was called. I still had to register at 18 but the fighting was over. My parents were (are) proper “God fearin” folk and taught me from a young age that conflict solved nothing. Turn th other cheek etc. So guess what I did at 20 with a child on the way and no promising work prospects? Yep, signed up with “Uncle Sam Aint Released Me Yet”. I spent the 80′s in the service of my country and happily “drank the koolaid”. I believed in it all. Patriot all the way! Huuurrrahh! There are things I did for my country I’m not proud of and some that are so terrible I have entire months of my service my mind refuses to remember. I hope I never do.

And now here I am wondering why we are in a foreign country AGAIN fighting another un-winnable war. As long as we have “journalists” and “reporters” in amongst the action we will lose. Kick out the civilians and let the soldiers do what we were trained to do and we’ll be home in time for the Superbowl!

I know it’s not PC, but guess what?  War is ugly, and civilians who get in the way sometimes die. Friendly fire happens. Till you’ve been there and experienced the confusing thrill/horror of the terror/adrenalin rush you don’t get to judge. Yes, some soldiers will snap and do unspeakable things. Train them right and a great soldier will be hovering right on the edge of insanity ready to do anything to “get er done”. There’s good reason many of our generation returned with problems adjusting.

Better stop now, before I REALLY get off on a roll…

Until Later
